Managing stress as a single parent

On Behalf of | Jun 15, 2022 | Child Custody |

Divorce can change the lives of all family members. Usually, parents go their separate ways and live in different houses. While both parents may have custody rights, the lion’s share of childcare may fall to one parent.

While this can be extremely rewarding and pleasurable, it is by no means easy. Being a single parent can be stressful at times. Outlined below are a few tips that may help you deal with this stress.

Let go of guilt

Your marriage has reached its conclusion, and there is little benefit in dwelling on what happened before. Both spouses may have different opinions on what went wrong, and there is little to be gained from blaming yourself. Try to focus on your children, the future, and building an amicable co-parenting relationship with your former spouse, if you can.

Utilize support

Being a single parent doesn’t mean that you are on your own. You still have friends and family members who can help give you a break from time to time. Don’t be apprehensive about relying on your support network when you need to. In an ideal world, your ex may also be a part of this network. Many former spouses become friends eventually after divorce and do a tremendous job of raising their children.

Find time for yourself

Being healthy both physically and emotionally will make you a better parent. Make sure you still engage in activities that you enjoy. Even if this is reading at nighttime or attending an art class once per week, it will help you to maintain a positive outlook going forward.

In an ideal world, you and your co-parent will manage to come up with a parenting plan together. Sometimes, this isn’t how things work out though, and you may require a little assistance. Seeking legal guidance will help ensure that your parental rights are upheld at all times.
